The 151st slot and the last-minute insertion

Mew occupies the final slot (151) of the original Kanto Pokedex, programmed into Pokemon Red and Green in 1996 at the eleventh hour by Game Freak designer Shigeki Morimoto. Morimoto added the species after the final debug pass using approximately 300 bytes of spare cartridge ROM that became available when other code was optimised — a detail he confirmed in a 2018 Game Center CX interview. The decision was made without informing producer Satoshi Tajiri, and Mew was deliberately excluded from any normal in-game encounter, available only through special Nintendo distribution events at Toys R Us, Pokemon Stadium tournaments, and later Mystery Gift codes.

The Truck rumor and schoolyard mythology

The absence of a normal capture method, combined with Mew's appearance in the trading-card promotional artwork, fueled the most famous Pokemon urban legend of the late 1990s: that Mew could be found under a moveable truck parked next to the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City. The rumor was widely reproduced in unofficial strategy guides and remains a touchstone reference for early-internet Pokemon fan communities. A Strength glitch did eventually let cartridge owners move the truck, but no Mew lived underneath. A separate Mew Glitch using a Trainer ID exploit could indeed produce Mew on cartridge, but the method was technical enough that it remained a community secret.

Anime, film, and merchandise legacy

Mew's first cinematic appearance came in Pokemon: The First Movie (July 1998, Japan), positioned as the gentle counterweight to its laboratory-cloned rival Mewtwo. The film opens with a Mew being captured by Team Rocket scientists in a flashback to the Mewtwo cloning sequence. Voice performance was non-verbal cries by Satomi Korogi in both Japanese and the English dub. Mew has appeared in every mainline Pokemon title since 1996, the Pokemon Trading Card Game from Base Set Pikachu onward, Pokemon GO (October 2018), Super Smash Bros. as a Poke Ball summon since Melee (2001), and as the centrepiece of the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket mobile launch (October 2024).
