Tao
Movie 1963 · The Incredible Journey (Disney) / Sheila Burnford novel
Even-tempered Siamese who serves as caretaker to the elderly bull terrier on a multi-week wilderness journey.
Sheila Burnford completed The Incredible Journey in 1960, drawing on her own household of two dogs (a bull terrier and a Labrador) and a Siamese cat at her Port Arthur, Ontario home. The novel was published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1961 and won the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children Award in 1963. Walt Disney optioned the property the same year. The 1963 Disney film adaptation, directed by Fletcher Markle, used three trained animal performers under the supervision of legendary animal trainer Frank Weatherwax, whose family had trained the Lassie dogs for the MGM features. Tao was performed by a seal-point Siamese named Syn Cat, who had previously played the title role in Disney's 1965 That Darn Cat! and won a PATSY Award for that performance. The 1963 production was an unusually demanding animal shoot: Markle filmed across remote sections of Ontario's Algoma District over multiple seasons, requiring the animals to work in genuine wilderness rather than controlled studio environments. Disney released the film on 20 November 1963, mere days before the Kennedy assassination; the box-office release was disrupted by the news cycle but the picture recovered through subsequent rereleases. The novel's narrative voice, an omniscient third-person register that gives the animals interior life without converting them into talking characters, was preserved in the film through Rex Allen's sparingly used narration. The 1993 remake Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, directed by Duwayne Dunham, made significant changes: it added celebrity voice-over (Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, Sally Field) to deliver the animals' interior monologue directly, and replaced the seal-point Siamese with a Himalayan-mix called Sassy voiced by Field. Burnford herself died in 1984 and never commented publicly on the later remake. The original 1963 film remains a fixture in older Canadian primary-school screening rotations alongside the novel itself.
