Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 20, 2026
The website works without an account. Private naming activity stays in your browser unless you deliberately create a shared poll or subscribe by email.
Website data stored in your browser
Favorites, recently viewed names, generator filters and results, quiz results, visit timestamps used to recognize a return visit, shared-list edit keys, and an optional newsletter unsubscribe key can be stored in your browser's local storage. This information is not sent to iCatNames merely because it exists. You can remove it by clearing site data in your browser.
Shared shortlists and anonymous votes
When you explicitly create a family vote, the selected public name IDs, list title, optional cat description, vote totals, and creation/expiry dates are stored on our server. The share URL contains a random public token—not the cat description or a person's identity. A separate edit key stays in the creator's browser and is not included in the public link. Shared pages are marked noindex and expire after 180 days unless removed sooner.
Voting uses a random, first-party browser cookie. We store a one-way hash of that random value to limit each browser to one current vote per list. The feature does not need your name, email address, IP address in the vote record, or an account.
Weekly email digest
We store your email address only after you check the consent box and submit a digest form. It is used for the weekly iCatNames naming digest and operational unsubscribe processing. Every digest includes an unsubscribe option; unsubscribed records are excluded from delivery. We do not sell newsletter addresses.
Analytics and advertising on the website
The website uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate use of pages and tools, including searches, shortlist actions, shares, comparisons, votes, quiz completion, and return intervals. Event metadata describes the feature used; it is not designed to include email addresses or free-form cat descriptions. Google AdSense may serve advertising and use cookies or similar technologies under Google's policies. Browser privacy controls and supported consent or ad settings can limit this activity.
Public downloads and embedded tools
The public CSV contains only directory fields already displayed on the site. The embedded mini generator sends selected filters to the generator endpoint and links to public name records. It does not read a visitor's private shortlist from the host website.
Cat Names Expert iOS app
The iOS app does not require an account or ask for personal information. Its bundled name database works offline. Favorites and notes are stored locally with Apple's Core Data framework and are removed by iOS when the app is deleted. The app contains no analytics SDK or advertising SDK; visiting an external website link leaves the app and is governed by that website's policy.
Security, retention, and choices
We limit shared lists to the information needed for collaboration and use unguessable access tokens. No internet service can promise absolute security. You can delete a shared list from the browser that created it, clear private browser storage at any time, unsubscribe from email, or contact us for help with a server-held subscription or shared list.
Children's privacy
iCatNames is a general-audience naming resource and is not designed to collect personal information from children. Please do not put a child's personal information into a shared-list title or cat description.
