Mittens

Movie 2008 · Bolt (Walt Disney Animation Studios)

Cynical black-and-white New York alley cat whose forced cross-country trip with the deluded title dog reluctantly turns into friendship.

Mittens is the secondary lead of Disney's 2008 computer-animated film Bolt, voiced by Susie Essman (Curb Your Enthusiasm). The character is a New York alley cat with a backstory of having been declawed and abandoned by her previous owners — a fact the film explicitly addresses as the source of her cynicism. She is captured by the title dog Bolt under the premise that she is a Green-Eyed Man henchman, and reluctantly becomes his guide on the cross-country journey to Los Angeles. The character was a late addition to the script during the production's 2007 retool under directors Chris Williams and Byron Howard, replacing earlier ferret characters.
