Nala Cat
Internet 2010 · Instagram (@nala_cat, 2012–present)
Round-cheeked blue-eyed mixed-breed cat whose visual template shaped the broader Instagram-cat aesthetic.
Varisiri Methachittiphan, who posts as Pookie, adopted Nala in 2010 from the Riverside County Department of Animal Services after spotting her in a kennel during a routine shelter visit. Nala was estimated at five months old at intake, listed as a Siamese-tabby mix, and was brought into a household that already included rescues fostered by Methachittiphan and her sister Ping. The Instagram account opened in October 2012, before Instagram had launched video, when the platform's pet-account ecology consisted of perhaps two dozen visible feeds. Nala's post cadence settled at one image every twenty-four to forty-eight hours, shot against unobtrusive home interiors with the wide-eyed face foregrounded. The follower count crossed one million in 2016 and approximately four million by April 2020, the same week Guinness World Records certified her as the most-followed cat on Instagram. That certification ran in the 2021 Guinness edition. The household subsequently rebranded under Love Nala, a pet-food line launched in 2019 in partnership with the brand-development firm Tropiclean, distributed initially through Chewy and PetSmart. A children's book, Living Your Best Life with Nala Cat, was published by Andrews McMeel in 2020. Methachittiphan donates a portion of merchandising proceeds to the Riverside shelter from which Nala was adopted and to a separate fund supporting trap-neuter-return programs across Southern California. The aesthetic template established by the account, soft daylight from a single window, neutral background, the cat seated and facing the lens, has been visibly copied across the rescue-cat Instagram cohort that followed, including White Coffee Cat and Smoothie. Nala turned approximately fifteen in 2025. Her Instagram presence remains active, though the post cadence has slowed since the launch of additional accounts in the same household for Coffee, Luna, and Steve, all rescues. Coverage in the Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed, and Vice has positioned her as the bridge case between the homemade Instagram cat of the early 2010s and the structured pet-influencer industry that followed.
