Type-Moon origin and visual-novel debut

Neco-Arc first appeared in Type-Moon's 2000 doujin visual novel Tsukihime as a chibi cat-deformed alter ego of the vampire-protagonist Arcueid Brunestud. The character was designed by Type-Moon co-founder and illustrator Takashi Takeuchi as a one-off bonus character for the Plus Disc expansion and was never intended for the main story. The "Bun!" catchphrase and exaggerated proportions deliberately clash with the otherwise serious Nasuverse tone, establishing Neco-Arc as Type-Moon's in-house parody mascot rather than a canon Tsukihime character.

Melty Blood fighting-game roster

Neco-Arc graduated to playable fighter in Melty Blood (2002) on Windows PC, the doujin fighting-game adaptation of Tsukihime developed by French-Bread. The character returned in every subsequent Melty Blood revision — Re-Act (2004), Act Cadenza (2005), Actress Again (2008), Current Code (2010) — and finally rejoined the roster as a DLC fighter in Melty Blood: Type Lumina (September 2021) on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Type Lumina was the first Melty Blood title published outside of Japan in English by SEGA, giving Neco-Arc her first official Western release. The Lumina version's move set retained the trademark chibi animations and added several new joke supers including the Neco-Arc Bubbles cluster summon.

Crossover appearances and meme status

Neco-Arc appears in the Carnival Phantasm anime (2011, three-episode parody OVA based on Tsukihime and Fate/stay night), the 2003 Melty Blood drama CD series, and as a cameo in the Fate/Grand Order mobile game's 2018 Type-Moon Festival event. The character has been one of Type-Moon's consistent top-selling merchandise lines through its annual Type-Moon Ace magazine and the Animate retail partnership, with plush, acrylic stands, and the long-running Neco-Arc t-shirt line. Internet meme culture rediscovered Neco-Arc in 2022 when Melty Blood: Type Lumina's Western launch revived clip compilations on Twitter and TikTok, with the "Bun!" catchphrase becoming a stand-alone copypasta independent of the Tsukihime source material.
