Anakin the Two-Legged Cat

The Gentlebros and Singapore indie scene

The Gentlebros is a three-person Singapore indie studio founded in 2014 by Desmond Wong, Joel Tang, and Lee Yi Xiong. The studio's debut commercial release Slashy Hero (2016) preceded Cat Quest, which launched on Steam, iOS, and Android on 8 August 2017 with a PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch port in November 2017 under publisher PQube. The unnamed orange-tabby protagonist (referred to in fan communities simply as "The Cat") wears a red hood inspired by Zelda's Hyrule traveller silhouette and a cape that doubles as a parachute glider in late-game traversal.

Felingard and the cat-pun design vocabulary

The overworld map of Felingard is built around real-world action-RPG geography templates — Studio Ghibli's overworld pastoral aesthetic, Final Fantasy Tactics' island layout, and the Diablo dungeon-portal mechanic — overlaid with relentless cat-themed naming. Towns include Bermew-da, Catpernicus, and Felindale; quests reference paw-litics and the local Fur Reserve. Side quests give the protagonist sword and spell choices, and the boss-fight Dragonblood villain antagonist roster includes Drakoth, Daosalan, and Galileo, all referencing star constellation names.

Sequels and commercial success

Cat Quest passed one million copies sold across all platforms by April 2019, making it Singapore's most commercially successful indie game at that point. The 2019 sequel Cat Quest II added a dog co-op companion named Lupus the Dog of the Dragoonblood (released 24 September 2019 on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch), and the 2024 third entry Cat Quest III shipped on 8 August 2024 with a pirate-ship overworld traversal mechanic, ship combat, and an island-hopping open sea map replacing the original Felingard land map. The Gentlebros remain independent and Singapore-based as of 2026, with all three Cat Quest titles still in active distribution. The protagonist's red-hood-and-cape silhouette has appeared as a costume in Brawlhalla (Ubisoft, 2022 crossover patch) and as a guest hero in Hyper Light Drifter's 2018 anniversary patch.
