Orange Siamese Cat Names

Orange on a Siamese is shown only on the points, and registries split on whether to call it Siamese at all. The cross is registered as Red Point — Flame Point in pet circles — produced when the X-linked O allele combines with the cs/cs Himalayan temperature-sensitive allele. Result: a creamy ivory body with apricot-to-orange face, ears, legs, tail. CFA placed Red Points in the Colorpoint Shorthair division (1964), separate from the four traditional Siamese colors (seal 1906, blue 1934, chocolate 1952, lilac 1955). TICA and GCCF kept Red Point inside the Siamese breed.

Quirk of the X-linked genetics: roughly 80% of red-pointed Siamese are male, since a male needs only one O allele on his single X. A heterozygous female (Oo) produces a Tortie Point instead. And every Red Point is technically a tabby — the O allele is epistatic over non-agouti, so red-pointed cats always show ringed tail, faint leg barring, and sometimes a ghost mask on the face.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a Flame Point Siamese?

Flame Point is the pet-trade name for the Red Point Siamese — same cat, less formal label. The genotype carries the cs/cs Himalayan allele (which produces the pointed pattern) on top of the X-linked O allele (which produces the orange color). Body is creamy white; points are apricot to deep orange. Under CFA, Flame Points are registered as Colorpoint Shorthair (a 1964 division). Under TICA and GCCF, they're registered as Siamese.

Why are most Red Point Siamese male?

The O allele is X-linked. A male cat (XY) needs only one O allele to express orange, so a male kitten with one O parent has a 50% chance of being orange. A female cat (XX) needs O on both X chromosomes to be fully orange — a heterozygous female (Oo) becomes a tortie. That sex-linkage produces the well-known statistic that roughly 80% of orange-coat cats across all breeds are male. Among Red Point Siamese the same skew applies.

Are Red Point Siamese as vocal as the seal-and-chocolate point variants?

Yes. The Meezer voice — what CFA calls a vocal style 'unsurpassed by any other breed in its ability to communicate with humans' — comes from the breed's foundation genetics, not the point color. Red Points talk as much as Seal Points. The orange-coat folklore that 'orange cats are dumber and louder' has no genetic backing in Siamese-type cats; what's louder is the Siamese vocal architecture, regardless of which point color sits on top of it. Names that suit the voice — Echo, Aria, Cadence — fit a Red Point as cleanly as any other point variant.
