Orange Colorpoint Shorthair Cat Names
A red-point Colorpoint Shorthair is the cat that exists because someone wanted a flame-pointed Siamese. The Colorpoint Shorthair was built in the late 1940s by crossing a red tabby American Shorthair with a seal-point Siamese, specifically to carry warm red and cream into the pointed pattern the Siamese could not produce on its own. When the CFA granted the breed championship status in 1964, red point and cream point were the only two colors recognized. So an orange-pointed cat of this breed is not an accident; it is the entire reason the breed was created. The body stays pale ivory while the ears, mask, paws and tail glow apricot-to-flame, often with faint tabby barring, over deep-blue Siamese eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a red-point Colorpoint Shorthair just an orange Siamese?
Closely related, but registered as its own breed. The Siamese standard recognizes only four point colors (seal, blue, chocolate, lilac); red and cream points were bred in by outcrossing to red domestic shorthairs, and the CFA classifies those cats as Colorpoint Shorthairs rather than Siamese. The body type is the same elegant Siamese frame.
Why does the orange show only on the points?
The pointed pattern is temperature-sensitive: pigment develops only on the cooler parts of the body, so the warm red concentrates on the ears, face, legs and tail while the body stays pale ivory. Because every red cat is genetically tabby, a red point usually shows faint striped barring within the points.
What colors does the breed come in besides red point?
Sixteen point colors in total. Red and cream points came first in 1964; lynx (tabby) points and tortie points were added by 1969. The breed exists specifically to extend the Siamese palette beyond its original four colors while keeping the same type and blue eyes.
