White Siamese Cat Names

A solid white Siamese is, strictly speaking, a contradiction. The Siamese standard since CFA's 1906 founding has been built around point coloration — a paler body with darker face, ears, legs, and tail — and a cat with no points at all does not show as Siamese. To produce a true-white Siamese-type cat without breaking that standard, British breeders crossed pointed Siamese with white domestic shorthairs through the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the resulting line was registered as Foreign White in the GCCF in 1966 — Siamese in body, expression, and voice, but solid white because of the dominant W allele on the KIT gene.

That W allele carries a separate consequence. ASPCA-cited statistics put the deafness rate in blue-eyed white cats at 65–85%; the Siamese signature is its deep sapphire blue eye. Foreign White breeders selectively bred away from the deafness association without losing the eye color, but the link is documented and a kitten from non-pedigree stock should be BAER-tested before adoption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a solid white Siamese actually a Siamese?

Not under the strict show standard. CFA's Siamese standard requires point coloration — a darker mask, ears, legs, and tail against a paler body — so a cat with a fully white coat does not qualify. The closest registry-recognized equivalent is the Foreign White, developed by GCCF breeders in the early 1960s and recognized in 1966. Foreign Whites carry the Siamese body type, the Meezer voice, and the sapphire blue eye, but the W gene masks any underlying point color.

Why is the deafness rate higher in blue-eyed white cats?

The dominant W allele on the KIT gene disrupts melanocyte migration during fetal development. The same disruption that produces the white coat also affects the iris (often producing blue eyes) and the stria vascularis of the inner ear's cochlea, which can cause congenital sensorineural deafness. ASPCA-cited figures put the deafness rate at 65–85% in blue-eyed white cats, 40% in odd-eyed whites, and 17–20% in non-blue-eyed whites. Foreign White breeders selected against deaf founders, but BAER testing is still standard practice in pedigree lines.

What names suit a white Siamese-type cat?

Foreign White cats inherit the Thai-leaning naming canon of the Siamese parent — Anong, Mali, Lek, Som — without the seal-and-coffee register that fits a pointed cat. Snow-and-ivory names that match the W-gene coat work directly: Pearl, Frost, Marble, Alabaster. For a cat with the breed's documented vocal personality, Echo and Aria respect the Meezer voice without the visual cues a pointed coat would suggest.
