Suki the Adventure Cat

Internet 2017 · Instagram @sukiicat

Curious, leash-trained, willing to ride in canoes, sit on tents and pose against mountain backdrops.

Suki, a Bengal with a rosetted brown coat and large green eyes, was adopted in March 2017 by Martina Gutfreund and Kenny Hildebrandt in Edmonton, Alberta. The Bengal breed, developed from crosses between Asian Leopard Cats and domestic shorthairs from the 1960s onward and recognised under TICA from 1986, carries the active high-energy temperament that has made the breed a frequent subject of adventure-cat content. Suki's Instagram account took off through landscape compositions that placed her against Canadian Rockies vistas (Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Lake Louise), alpine lakes, European city skylines (Reykjavík, Edinburgh, Lisbon), and a documented catalogue of approximately a dozen countries visited across her active travel period. Coverage by Bored Panda, My Modern Met, Global News, the CBC, and a long subsequent tail of pet-content aggregators pushed follower counts past one million followers in the late 2010s. Gutfreund has openly explained in interviews with Outside magazine and Backpacker that Suki wears a leash for all park trips and that the leash is digitally removed in post-production, which is the only way the resulting photographs comply with Canadian national-park rules requiring pets to remain leashed at all times. The transparency about post-production has been cited in subsequent adventure-cat coverage as an unusually responsible approach to a content category that frequently obscures the welfare and regulatory realities of outdoor-cat travel. A photo book Adventures with Suki was published by Chronicle Books in 2019, collecting the account's strongest landscape compositions across the first two years of travel. Veterinary commentary has occasionally noted that the Bengal's high-energy temperament and athletic build make the breed unusually well-suited to harness-trained outdoor travel, though the same commentary has cautioned that not all individual Bengals tolerate the routine and that owner expectations should be tempered by the cat's individual personality. Suki was approximately nine in 2025; the account remains active with continued post cadence and ongoing travel documentation, including more recent trips to South America and parts of southeast Asia. Charitable contributions have supported several Edmonton-area shelter programmes and Canadian wildlife conservation initiatives.
