Bob
Real pet 2007 · A Street Cat Named Bob (James Bowen, 2012)
Ginger tom whose unprompted attachment to a recovering busker became the basis of an international bestseller.
A ginger tom turning up injured outside a North London building in spring 2007 was the start of busker James Bowen's recovery. Bob followed Bowen to his Covent Garden pitch and later to Big Issue rounds. Bowen's memoir "A Street Cat Named Bob" spent more than 76 weeks at the top of the Sunday Times bestseller list, sold over a million copies in the UK, and has been translated into 30 languages. The 2016 film adaptation cast Bob as himself in the lead feline role. Bob died on 15 June 2020, aged between 14 and 16. A memorial sculpture was unveiled in Islington Green, London, in 2021.
