Real pet 2010 · White Settlement Public Library, Texas
A calm, people-loving mascot who quietly outlasted the officials who tried to remove him.
Short summary: Browser was an American library cat who lived at the White Settlement Public Library near Fort Worth, Texas. A grey tabby born around 2010, he had been a resident mascot for years when, in June 2016, the White Settlement City Council voted to evict him from the building. The decision triggered an enormous international backlash: a petition gathered more than 12,000 signatures from around the world, and the mayor reportedly received over 1,500 emails defending the cat. On July 1, 2016, the council unanimously reversed itself and declared Browser the Library Cat for Life. The councilman who had pushed the removal lost his reelection bid that year, while Browser kept his post. He died of natural causes on September 3, 2025.
