Socks
Real pet 1989 · Bill Clinton (US President 1993–2001)
Black-and-white tuxedo stray adopted by the Clinton family in Arkansas, becoming the first family pet to maintain his own White House mailing address.
Socks was adopted in 1989 in Little Rock, Arkansas, when he jumped into Chelsea Clinton's arms outside her piano teacher's house. He became the First Cat from January 1993 when Bill Clinton took office. Socks received approximately 75,000 letters per week at the White House — enough that the staff set up a dedicated "Socks the Cat" mailing operation that produced replies and a children's book. He shared the White House (uneasily) with the Clinton family's later dog Buddy, an arrangement Clinton himself joked about as "harder than Middle East peace." On leaving the White House in 2001, Socks was given to Clinton's former secretary Betty Currie. He died on 20 February 2009.
