Bagpuss
Tv 1974 · Bagpuss (BBC children's programme)
Stuffed pink-and-white striped cat who narrates a workshop of broken-toy restorers in stop-motion.
Thirteen episodes were ever made, and that was enough to win a 1999 BBC poll for the nation's favourite children's programme. Created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin and broadcast on BBC1 from 12 February to 7 May 1974, Bagpuss is a saggy, pink-and-white striped stuffed cat owned by the young girl Emily — whose shop, set in an Edwardian-era window, displays lost or broken items rather than selling merchandise. Bagpuss "wakes" at the start of each episode to host a workshop of repair-workers: Professor Yaffle the woodpecker bookend, Madeleine the rag doll, Gabriel the toad, and the mice on the mouse-organ. The original puppet now lives in the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge, Canterbury.
