Tom Cat
Tv 1940 · Tom and Jerry (William Hanna and Joseph Barbera)
Grey-blue domestic shorthair whose rivalry-and-occasional-friendship with the brown mouse Jerry generated 164 theatrical shorts and seven Academy Awards.
Tom (originally "Jasper" in the 1940 debut short "Puss Gets the Boot") is the cat half of Tom and Jerry, the cartoon series William Hanna and Joseph Barbera produced for MGM from 1940 to 1958. The original 114 theatrical shorts won seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Film — more than any other character-driven series in history — including "The Cat Concerto" (1946) and "The Two Mouseketeers" (1951). Despite being the antagonist, Tom is rarely the villain: most shorts let him lose sympathetically, and his actual successes against Jerry are rare and short-lived. Hanna and Barbera left MGM in 1957 when the studio shut down its animation department.
