Oriental Cat Names

CFA's Oriental breed standard recognises over 600 colour, pattern, and coat-length combinations — the largest palette of any pedigreed cat in any registry. The Siamese, by comparison, is restricted to four traditional points. The Oriental is what happens when you take Siamese body type and remove every restriction on what colour the cat can be.

The breed is explicitly man-made, and the founding paperwork is unusually well-documented. Baroness von Ullman started the UK breeding programme in 1951 with a goal of producing a self-chocolate cat of "foreign" type. The first modern kitten — a Havana — was born in October 1952. Foundation crosses included Chocolate-pointed Siamese, Russian Blues, Abyssinians, British Shorthairs, and non-pedigree domestic shorthairs. American breeders later expanded the palette to the 600-plus colour combinations CFA recognises today. The Oriental Shorthair reached CFA registration in 1974 and Championship in 1977; the Oriental Longhair was added in 1988, after which CFA simplified the breed name to just "Oriental."

The body inherits Siamese geometry. Long tubular frame, wedge head forming an equilateral triangle, broad-based ears continuing the line of the wedge, almond eyes — green in coloured Orientals, blue in Foreign Whites. The coat lies painted-on against the body in shorthairs. Females weigh 5 to 8 pounds, males 8 to 14.

The Oriental's naming logic flows directly from the colour palette. A black Oriental — CFA classes this as Ebony — fits Onyx, Obsidian, Raven, Soot. A Havana suits Mocha, Cocoa, Truffle. A Foreign Lilac wears Lavender, Heather, Wisteria. A Foreign White, with its blue eyes, suits Pearl, Ivory, Snow, Frost. The breed's 600 colours route owners directly toward our colour-specific cat name collections — black, white, grey, lilac, chocolate, cream — each carrying its own naming logic that the Oriental's body type can wear.
