Manx Cat Names

Three official tail categories. Rumpy: completely tailless, dimple where the tail would attach — the only category eligible for the show ring. Stumpy: short, stubby tail. Longy: full-length tail. All three turn up in the same litter, because the Manx mutation is governed by an incomplete dominant gene that has been threading through the cat population of the Isle of Man since at least the mid-1700s, and probably since the 1500s when visiting sailors first documented the tailless cats.

The breed appeared at Olympia in 1885 — among the very first cats ever shown in Britain — and the first formal Manx breed standard was written in 1903. CFA registered the breed in its founding cohort; TICA granted Championship to both the shorthair Manx and the longhair Cymric in June 1979. GCCF still shows only fully tailless rumpies; stumpies and longies are kept for breeding because mating two rumpies together can produce Manx Syndrome, a spinal-defect spectrum the breed cannot eliminate without losing taillessness itself.

A Manx is built like a bowling ball with hind legs longer than the front pair, which gives the breed its hopping gait and an old nickname — the rabbit cat. CFA, TICA, and GCCF all describe Manx temperament as dog-like: fetch-trainable, conflict-avoidant, prone to midnight activity bursts, and communicating through a trilling sound rather than a meow.

Names that honour the Isle of Man read more honestly than generic tail-puns. Douglas (the capital). Snaefell (the island's highest peak). Tynwald (the world's oldest continuous parliament, sitting on the island). Bree, Peel, Ramsey for villages. Finn or Bran for the Celtic-Norse undertone the breed inherits from its Viking-era longhair ancestry.

Is your kitten a rumpy, a stumpy, or a longy? The answer points to a different naming line for each.
