Bengal Cat Names

Bengals will play in their water bowls. TICA's breed page is direct about it: the breed is "fascinated by water" — a behavior most domestic cats avoid. They share this trait with their Asian Leopard Cat ancestor (Prionailurus bengalensis), the small wild cat from whom every Bengal descends. The first cross — conservationist Jean Mill's domestic-tom-with-Asian-Leopard-Cat-female pairing — happened in 1963. The breed she founded was accepted by TICA in 1986 and reached Championship in 1991. CFA, slower to recognize hybrid breeds, accepted Bengals in 2016 and advanced them to Championship in 2018. CFA registration still requires Bengals be at least five generations removed from any wild ancestor in the pedigree.

The wild lineage shows in more than the spotted coat. Bengals climb relentlessly, vocalize in chirps and trills more than meows, and are routinely walked on harnesses by owners who otherwise would not consider it for a cat. The "glitter" gene, unique to the breed, gives many Bengals an iridescent sheen across the coat in sunlight. GCCF guidance specifically lists exercise wheels, tunnels, and tall shelving as breed requirements — not luxuries.

Bengal names should match the lineage, not soften it. Wild and predatory: Leo, Onyx, Jasper, Bagheera, Indigo. Asian honorifics that fit the leopard cat's range: Rani, Shiva, Maharaja, Bagheera. Honors to the breed founder: Jean (for Jean Mill), Pennybank (her cattery name). And behaviorally derived: Ripple, Comet, Vault — names that name the cat for what it does, not for what it looks like.

Vault for the climber. Ripple for the water-player. Comet for the always-moving one. Bengal names land best when they name what the cat does, not what the cat looks like.
