White Australian Mist Cat Names

Solid white is not on the Australian Mist registry sheet. Truda Straede's 1977 founding formula — half Burmese, one quarter Abyssinian, one quarter domestic shorthair tabby — was built to produce visible spotted or marbled tabby patterns softened by the Abyssinian's ticked agouti gene. The seven recognized colors (brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, caramel) all carry visible pattern; a solid-white Mist would have no pattern to soften, losing the breed's defining "misty" appearance. White spotting and bicolor patterns can occur, but the dominant W allele on the KIT gene that produces fully solid-white cats is not part of the foundation stock. Mist eyes are required to be green by GCCF standard, and the breed's eumelanistic founding stock keeps it clear of the deafness risk that affects dominant-W white cats in unrelated breeds. Our white cat names list applies more readily to dominant-W white cats than to a mostly-white Mist, where breed identity comes from misty ticking, not from white spotting itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Australian Mist be solid white?

Not under the breed standard. The seven recognized colors — brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, caramel — all require visible spotted or marbled tabby pattern softened by the Abyssinian-derived ticked agouti gene. A solid-white cat would have no pattern to soften and would not meet the breed's defining 'misty' appearance. White spotting and bicolor patterns are possible but solid-white Mist is not a championship variant.

Are predominantly-white Australian Mist cats deaf?

Unlikely. The deafness risk in white cats traces to the dominant W allele on the KIT gene, which disrupts melanocyte migration in both the iris and the cochlea and produces the well-documented 65-85% deafness rate in blue-eyed white cats. Australian Mist eyes are required to be green by GCCF standard, and the breed's eumelanistic founding stock does not commonly carry dominant W. A predominantly-white Mist most likely carries the wS spotting allele, which does not link to deafness.

What's the difference between dominant W and wS in cats?

Both produce white in the coat, by different mechanisms. Dominant W is epistatic over all other color loci — meaning a genetically tabby, calico, or black cat with dominant W reads as solid white, and the cat carries the deafness and blue-eye link. The wS allele produces only white spotting (white patches on a colored coat), without disrupting melanocyte migration in the inner ear, and so does not carry the same hearing risk. Bicolor and tuxedo cats are wS; solid white cats are usually dominant W.
