Bagi

Comic 1984 · Bagi, the Monster of Mighty Nature

Affectionate as a kitten, intelligent as a teenager, and tragically torn between human consciousness and feline instinct as she matures.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted released on 8 June 2012, directed by Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, and Conrad Vernon from a screenplay credited to Darnell and Noah Baumbach. Bryan Cranston, then in his fifth season as Walter White on AMC's Breaking Bad and shortly to win his third consecutive Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy in September 2014, took the role of the scarred Siberian tiger Vitaly as his first feature-animation lead. Cranston brought a heavy Russian accent to the part, distinguishing the character from the established Madagascar ensemble. Vitaly's backstory, delivered across mid-film flashback sequences, centres on a circus stunt that went wrong: Vitaly had performed a flaming-ring jumping act using olive oil to slick his fur through ever-smaller burning hoops, until on one attempt he over-oiled and caught fire on the ring itself, leaving him with extensive scarring across his face and body and unable to perform afterwards. Character designers at DreamWorks built his physical model with a deliberately matted, uneven coat to suggest both physical injury and emotional decline, a contrast to the franchise's otherwise vivid colour palette. His third-act recovery comes through Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) coaching him to re-stage the ring jump using hair conditioner rather than olive oil as a coat-protecting agent. The picture grossed approximately 747 million USD worldwide on a 145 million USD production budget, the highest gross of the four-feature Madagascar franchise across the 2005 original, the 2008 Escape 2 Africa sequel, and the 2012 third entry. The Penguins of Madagascar spinoff (2014, directed by Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith) does not feature Vitaly. Cranston subsequently took feature-animation lead voice roles in Isle of Dogs (2018, Wes Anderson) and The One and Only Ivan (2020, Disney). The DreamWorks Madagascar circus tie-in toy lineup released by Mattel in summer 2012 made Vitaly one of the higher-priced action figures in the set.
