Belaud
Historical 1558 · Joachim du Bellay, "Vers François sur la mort d'un petit chat" (1558)
Described in du Bellay's elegy as small, soft-furred, attentive to mice yet gentle to humans, and a constant study companion.
Keiichi Arawi launched Nichijou in Kadokawa Shoten's Shonen Ace magazine in the May 2006 issue, running the series through Helvetica Standard side stories until the original run ended in November 2015 across ten collected tankobon volumes. The manga returned to Shonen Ace as a revival in October 2022, continuing as of 2024. Sakamoto is the household cat of the child genius Hakase, an eight-year-old inventor, and her android creation Nano Shinonome; he gains human speech only when wearing a red scarf that Hakase invented specifically as a voice device for the cat.
Sakamoto demands to be addressed as "Sakamoto-san", insisting on the honorific suffix despite Hakase routinely ignoring this request by addressing him as "Sakamoto" or simply mocking the demand. He is repeatedly subjected to indignities including being dressed in ribbons, being fed expired marshmallows, and being commanded to demonstrate dance routines, all of which he endures with weary dignity. The honorific gag remains one of Nichijou's most quoted recurring jokes among Japanese readers.
Kyoto Animation produced the twenty-six-episode anime adaptation that aired on TBS between April and September 2011, directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, the studio's most senior director after his earlier work on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Studio sources have repeatedly cited Nichijou as among Kyoto Animation's highest-budget television productions of the early 2010s, with animation density per episode exceeding typical industry averages by a wide margin. Voice actor Minoru Shiraishi performed Sakamoto in the anime adaptation; Funimation later licensed the series for North America in 2017 after years of fan-translation-only availability.
The manga has sold more than two million copies in Japan according to Kadokawa Shoten figures, and the property generated a long tail of character goods, drama CDs, and a Nintendo 3DS visual novel game released by Kadokawa in 2013. Sakamoto's combination of small black cat with a vivid red scarf has become one of the most reproduced visual silhouettes in 2010s slice-of-life manga merchandising.
