Balinese Cat Names

Of the major longhaired pedigree breeds — Persian, Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest, Ragdoll, Birman — only the Balinese has no undercoat. GCCF puts it directly: "single coat, in contrast to the double coat of other longhairs; the hair lies close to the body." The structural consequence is that the Balinese needs less grooming than any other longhair. The cosmetic consequence is the breed's signature plume tail, sometimes five inches long, dragging behind a body that otherwise looks Siamese.

That is what the Balinese is: a long-coated Siamese. The longhair gene appeared as a recessive in Siamese litters as early as 1871, when a UK magazine first noted longhaired Siamese kittens; a 1928 registry entry documents another. For decades they were sold as pets and not bred forward. In the 1940s and 1950s, two American breeders formalised the breed — Helen Smith of Merry Mews in New York, who named it after the graceful dancers of Bali, and Marion Dorsey of Rai-Mar in California. CFA granted Championship in 1970. GCCF followed with Championship recognition in October 1985.

The Balinese inherits Siamese geometry exactly — wedge head, large ears, deep sapphire blue eyes, long tubular body. CFA describes the temperament as "vocal, affectionate, active" with a clown hiding inside, and notes the breed is "somewhat less talkative than Siamese" — softer voices but ongoing conversation. The Javanese division (lynx and tortie points), originally a separate breed, was merged into Balinese by CFA in 2008.

The breed name is American invention, not Indonesian heritage — Smith named it for what its movement reminded her of. Balinese dancer names — Mekar, Sekar, Putri, Dewi, Ayu — work as honest cultural reference. The Balinese is the longhair Siamese; the Javanese (now merged into Balinese in CFA) is the lynx-and-tortie-point branch of the same family. Siamese owners moving toward a longer coat tend to land here naturally.
