Yellow Turkish Van Cat Names
A yellow or red-marked Turkish Van isn't an off-standard cat — it's the breed in its oldest form. The signature Van pattern leaves the body chalk-white and confines color to two places: a cap on the head, usually split between or around the ears, and the full tail. This comes from an extreme expression of the white spotting gene, a partial leucism that registries grade near the top of the piebald scale. CFA allows no more than 15% of the body to carry color.
The classic, original marking color is auburn — a warm ginger-amber that this site files under yellow. When the breed's modern Western history began in 1955, with two British travelers bringing a pair back from Turkey, the foundation cats were white with auburn tails and auburn head marks. CFA later accepted red, cream, blue, brown, tortoiseshell and tabby versions, but auburn on white remains the heritage look. Turkish Vans are also known for odd eyes — one blue, one amber — and an unusual willingness to swim.
If your cat wears those traditional warm markings, here are names that suit the breed's Anatolian roots and its red-and-white coat.

Frequently Asked Questions
What color is a traditional Turkish Van?
The original and most iconic Turkish Van coloring is auburn — a warm ginger-to-amber red — set against a chalk-white body. This site files that warm range under yellow. When the breed reached the West in 1955, the imported foundation cats were white with auburn tails and auburn head markings. CFA has since accepted red, cream, blue, brown, tortoiseshell and tabby variations, but auburn on white is the heritage look that defines the breed's history.
What is the Van pattern?
The Van pattern, named for the breed, restricts color to the head and the tail while leaving the rest of the cat white. The head color usually sits as a cap between or around the ears, and the tail carries full color. It results from an extreme expression of the white spotting gene, a partial leucism that sits near the top of the piebald scale. CFA's standard allows occasional body spots but no more than 15% colored coat.
Do Turkish Vans have odd eyes?
Many do, and odd eyes are closely associated with the breed. A Turkish Van may have two blue eyes, two amber eyes, or one of each — the odd-eyed combination of one blue and one amber. In Turkey the prized Van cat is traditionally white with one blue and one amber eye. The breed is also famous for an unusual affinity for water, an association tied to the Lake Van region of eastern Turkey for which it is named.
