Chocolate Selkirk Rex Cat Names
The Selkirk Rex is the curly cat known as the cat in sheep's clothing, with plush, woolly fur that loosely curls right down to the whiskers. Its curl comes from a dominant gene, which sets it apart from the Devon and Cornish Rex, whose waves trace to recessive mutations. The breed started in Montana in 1987 with a curly rescue kitten named Miss DePesto, adopted by Persian breeder Jeri Newman, and outcrosses to Persian, British Shorthair, and Exotic Shorthair gave it a heavy, round, solidly boned build. Chocolate is a warm brown coat from the recessive b allele of the TYRP1 brown gene, richer and warmer than black and darker than cinnamon. On that thick curl the chocolate tone reads soft and teddy-bearish. Brown and cocoa picks like Coffee, Copper, Chestnut, and Hazel lean into the color, while Bear and Boots suit the plush curled coat, and Bailey, Gracie, and Ella keep things sweet. Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a Selkirk Rex curly?
The Selkirk Rex carries a dominant gene for its plush, loosely curled coat, so a single copy produces the curl. This is the opposite of the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex, whose waves come from recessive genes. The curl extends even to the whiskers, which is why the breed is called the cat in sheep's clothing. The trait first appeared in a rescue kitten, Miss DePesto, in Montana in 1987.
What does chocolate mean for a cat coat?
Chocolate is a warm brown coat produced by the recessive b allele of the TYRP1 brown gene. It changes how black pigment is made, giving a rich warm brown that is lighter than true black. It is also distinct from cinnamon, which comes from a separate, lighter allele in the same series. A cat must inherit two copies of the chocolate allele to show the color.
Which names suit a chocolate Selkirk Rex?
Warm-brown and cocoa names match the chocolate coat well, such as Coffee, Copper, Chestnut, and Hazel. For the thick curled fur, Bear and Boots fit the soft teddy-bear look. Sweet picks like Bailey, Gracie, and Ella round out the options. The full list below has 59 names that fit a chocolate Selkirk Rex.
