Red Balinese Cat Names

A red-point Balinese is a long-haired Siamese with flame-colored points. The Balinese arose as a natural long-haired mutation in Siamese litters, the same elegant cat with a silky medium coat and a plumed tail, and breeder Helen Smith named it not for the island but for the grace of Balinese temple dancers. The red point comes from the same outcrossing that created the warm-pointed Siamese-type cats: ears, mask, legs and tail in apricot-to-flame red over a pale cream body, with the deep-blue eyes intact and a soft ruff and tail plume catching the color. In some older registries a red-point long-hair like this was classed separately as a Javanese, after the neighboring island, before being folded back into the Balinese.

The names below link to both the Balinese breed and the red-coat tradition — warm, graceful, flame-pointed picks for a silky cat with blue eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a red-point Balinese the same as a Javanese?

Historically they were split. The Balinese is the long-haired Siamese in the four traditional point colors; long-haired cats in the newer red, cream, lynx and tortie points were once registered separately as Javanese. Most registries, including the CFA, have since merged the Javanese into the Balinese, so a red-point long-hair is simply a red-point Balinese today.

Where does the name Balinese come from?

Not from Bali. The breeder Helen Smith chose Balinese because the cat's flowing coat and graceful movement reminded her of Balinese dancers. The breed is an American development from long-haired Siamese, with no connection to Indonesia beyond the borrowed name.

Does the long coat change the red point pattern?

Only in texture. The same temperature-sensitive pointing puts the warm red on the ears, face, legs and tail over a pale body, but the Balinese's silky medium-length fur and plumed tail make the color look softer and more diffused than on the sleek shorthaired version. The blue eyes are identical.
