Longcat
Internet 2005 · Early imageboard meme (Futaba / 4chan)
An icon of deadpan internet surrealism, calm and patient while being stretched to legendary proportions for the camera.
Short summary: Longcat is one of the foundational cat memes of the early internet, a white cat photographed held up under the front legs so that her body appears extraordinarily, impossibly long. The real cat was a Japanese pet named Shiro, also nicknamed Nobiko. The image spread on Japanese imageboards around 2005 and 2006 before crossing to Western forums, where fans built an elaborate mock mythology around her, including an opposing black cat called Tacgnol, Longcat spelled backwards. Predating the polished cat celebrities of the social-media era, Longcat belongs to the raw, surreal humor of the mid-2000s web and is fondly remembered as a piece of internet history.
