Reserved in public, explosive when threatened; releases psychic energy from folded ear flaps.
United Feature Syndicate distributed Ernie Bushmiller's Fritzi Ritz strip from 1922, and Bushmiller introduced Nancy as a supporting niece character in 1933 before promoting her to lead in 1938 under the new title Nancy. The strip ran daily and Sunday until Bushmiller's death on August 15, 1982, after which successor cartoonists Mark Lasky, Jerry Scott, and Guy Gilchrist continued the property through several decades. Boots is Sluggo Smith's pet cat, drawn in Bushmiller's minimalist three-panel format and rendered as a black-and-white shorthaired cat with small white paws.
Nancy reached peak syndication of approximately 880 newspapers in the late 1970s, including the Chicago Sun-Times, the Washington Post, and dailies across forty-eight U.S. states and Canada. Bushmiller received the National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award nomination multiple times during his run and the Silver T-Square Award for thirty years of service in 1976. His three-panel economy of line became a foundational study text for subsequent generations of strip cartoonists, with cartoonist Mark Newgarden later co-writing the 2017 instructional book How to Read Nancy with Paul Karasik.
Boots functions as silent visual punctuation rather than a speaking character through the original Bushmiller run, leaning on the strip's celebrated economy of line. The cat appears in Sluggo's vacant-lot scenes, sometimes as setup for a three-panel sight gag, occasionally as Nancy's reluctant playmate. The minimalist approach matches Bushmiller's broader philosophy of stripping panels to their fundamental visual joke without verbal clutter.
Olivia Jaimes, the pseudonym of an undisclosed cartoonist, took over Nancy in April 2018 for Andrews McMeel Syndication and brought Boots back in updated digitally-drawn appearances, including a viral 2018 strip where Sluggo is illuminated by the cat-shaped glow of a phone screen. The Jaimes run won the 2019 National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award, the society's top annual honor, marking the first time Nancy received the Reuben since the Bushmiller era. Boots remains in active rotation in the contemporary strip.
