Pero

Comic 1969 · Puss in Boots (Toei Animation)

Brave, gallant, and theatrical; wears a plumed musketeer hat, duels with a rapier, and outwits an ogre while protecting his commoner companion Pierre.

Walt Disney Animation Studios released Aladdin on 11 November 1992, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker from a screenplay credited to Clements, Musker, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio. The picture loosely adapts the Aladdin tale from One Thousand and One Nights, recasting the protagonist as a Baghdad-influenced street thief in the fictional kingdom of Agrabah. Princess Jasmine's pet Bengal tiger Rajah was animated by Aaron Blaise under supervising animator Mark Henn, with reference work conducted at Lowry Park Zoo (now ZooTampa) in Florida and at Disney's Animal Kingdom planning facilities then under development. Blaise has stated in subsequent interviews that the production sourced live tiger reference across multiple US zoological collections to capture both adult and adolescent body language, and that Rajah's relatively short, stocky build was deliberately drawn for visual readability in scenes where the character shares the frame with Jasmine. The character is non-speaking across all his appearances, communicating through growls, body posture, and physical comedy; his most-quoted scene is the early sequence in which he tears the trousers off Prince Achmed, a wealthy suitor Jasmine has rejected. Rajah returns in the 1994 direct-to-video sequel The Return of Jafar, the 1996 Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and the Disney television series Aladdin (1994 to 1995, running for 86 episodes). In the 2019 Guy Ritchie live-action remake (with Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Mena Massoud as Aladdin), Rajah appears as a CGI tiger; the 2019 remake grossed approximately 1.05 billion USD worldwide. The original 1992 picture was the highest-grossing release of its year, taking approximately 504 million USD worldwide on an 28 million USD production budget. Aladdin won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 65th ceremony in March 1993 for "A Whole New World," written by Alan Menken and Tim Rice. Robin Williams's Genie performance is the film's widely remembered improvisational centrepiece; Rajah anchors the smaller domestic register surrounding Jasmine.
