Stray Cat

Comic 2000 · JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean

Curious, territorial, and silently menacing; fires compressed air bubbles, attaches to anyone who waters it, and recognizes only its caretaker Kiyomi Kujo.

Jeremy Irons voiced Scar in The Lion King (1994), one year after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for Reversal of Fortune (1990). Director Roger Allers and supervising animator Andreas Deja have stated in production interviews that Irons's performance during recording sessions in 1993 directly shaped the character's animation, with Deja drawing the lean angular silhouette and the recurring head-tilt gesture from observation of Irons's own body language. Animators also studied Klaus Kinski's performances, particularly in Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), as reference for the unhinged-aristocrat register. The musical number "Be Prepared," written by Elton John and Tim Rice with additional staging direction from the directors, presents Scar rallying the hyenas in a deliberately Nuremberg-style sequence with goose-stepping ranks and bright red lighting, an explicit visual reference to Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will (1935). Critics widely commented on the choice; Allers and Minkoff defended it as a deliberate adult-register beat in a children's film. Irons reportedly damaged his voice during the recording of the line "you won't get a sniff without me," which appears in the final film with a marked rasp; subsequent dialogue in Be Prepared was completed by Jim Cummings filling in for the strained register. The 2019 photoreal remake recast Scar with Chiwetel Ejiofor, who took the part in a more naturalistic register suited to that picture's photographic style. The original character's birth name, Taka, was established in tie-in materials including the 1994 book A Tale of Two Brothers and the 2024 prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, in which the young version of Scar appears performed by Kelvin Harrison Jr. Scar's downfall in the 1994 picture comes when the hyenas, having heard him repeatedly blame them for the realm's decline, turn and consume him in the closing frames.
