Cosmic Creepers

Movie 1971 · Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Walt Disney Productions)

A near-silent black cat familiar with film-stealing reaction shots; rides the enchanted bedknob alongside the children.

Dusty, a grey tabby domestic shorthair in San Mateo, California, became internationally known in 2011 after CBS News, the Associated Press, and subsequently Animal Planet documented his habit of stealing small items from neighbouring homes in his outdoor-roaming territory and dragging them back to his owner's yard. The owner's running inventory of stolen items crossed approximately 600 documented items by the time the news segments aired, with the catalogue including swimsuits, bras, gardening gloves, dog toys, kitchen sponges, paint rollers, a single sandal, a single child's shoe, and at one point an unopened bag of plant food. Night-vision footage captured by the household for the CBS News segment showed Dusty hauling individual fabric items over fences in apparent nightly outdoor expeditions. Animal Planet built a dedicated television special titled The Klepto Cat around the case, broadcast in late 2011, that included interviews with neighbours whose lost items had been catalogued in Dusty's collection and with veterinary behavioural specialists offering possible explanations for the behaviour. Follow-up coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Today show, and several pet-behaviour outlets discussed how relatively common low-grade pilfering is among free-roaming domestic cats, noting that the behavioural literature documents object-collecting cats with reasonable frequency but rarely at the volume and consistency that Dusty's case produced. The story has continued to be cited in pieces about feline behaviour as the canonical reference case for compulsive object-collecting in domestic cats. Dusty's post-viral biography included a small line of merchandise (T-shirts, calendars, prints) the proceeds of which the household directed to local San Mateo animal-welfare organisations, and the original Animal Planet special has been re-aired periodically through the 2010s. Dusty was estimated as approximately five years old at the 2011 viral cycle and died in approximately 2019 at age thirteen, with the household publishing a brief obituary that was picked up by several pet-content aggregators. The story remains in regular circulation as an example of feline behavioural curiosity, and the catalogue of stolen items is occasionally republished as a single illustration.
