Movie 1995 · Babe (Chris Noonan / Universal Pictures)

A smug, manipulative house cat who weaponises information; among the film's few unambiguous antagonists.

Shironeko, literally the white cat in Japanese, was a long-haired white domestic cat born in 2002 in Japan and photographed by his owner, identified in coverage by the single name Joko, from 2006 onward. The daily-photo blog 2 of 8, where the cat first appeared, became a low-traffic personal photography journal that gradually drew international attention from 2010 onward as the cat's tolerance for objects balanced on his head developed into a recurring framing. The most-circulated images show Shironeko seated motionless with fruit (oranges, persimmons, lemons), small eggs, paper objects, or smaller kittens balanced on the top of his head, the cat's eyes typically closed in apparent contentment. The patience required to maintain the framing earned him several nicknames including Basket Cat, when he appeared seated inside small wicker baskets, and the world's most relaxed cat, the byline applied by BuzzFeed in 2012. Coverage in Bored Panda, the Daily Mail, the Huffington Post, and Japanese television features on TBS and Fuji Television positioned him through the early 2010s as a quintessential Japanese cat-content figure, alongside Maru. The blog's long run of consistent daily posts (approximately 11,000 total entries between 2006 and 2018) made it one of the longest-sustained pet-blog projects on the Japanese internet. Shironeko died on 22 October 2018 at age sixteen, of complications from chronic renal disease that had been managed for the preceding two years. Joko published an extended farewell entry, and a subsequent commemorative photo collection, Shironeko: The Sixteen-Year Memorial Book, was released in Japan in 2019. The blog has continued as a memorial site and as the active account for several other long-haired cats raised in the same household, including offspring and adopted rescues that Joko has documented in the years since. Coverage in academic work on Japanese internet animal culture, including the 2020 Tokyo University of the Arts thesis collection Felidae Internet, has positioned Shironeko alongside Maru and Hana as the foundational generation of Japanese cat blogs that predated Instagram and YouTube as the primary venues for the form.
