Mysouff
Historical 1868 · Histoire de mes bêtes by Alexandre Dumas père
Routine-bound companion who reportedly walked partway up the Rue de l'Université each evening to meet Dumas returning from work.
Mysouff was a domestic cat kept by Alexandre Dumas père and described at length in his 1868 book Histoire de mes bêtes, sometimes translated as My Pets. Dumas wrote that the cat had so internalised his daily schedule that he would leave the apartment at a fixed hour and walk partway down the street to meet his master returning from the office of his newspaper. Dumas eventually owned two cats by this name, distinguishing them in the text as Mysouff I and Mysouff II. The chapter remains one of the most-quoted nineteenth-century French pieces of cat writing.
