Tom Quartz

Book 1872 · Roughing It (Mark Twain, 1872)

Solemn, opinionated, scornful of pocket mining; gives miners reproachful stares when they switch from placer claims to dynamite shafts.

The Vita Sanctae Geretrudis, composed by an anonymous monk at Nivelles within roughly a decade of the abbess's death on 17 March 659, survives in three Carolingian manuscript redactions edited by Bruno Krusch in volume 2 of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica's Scriptores rerum Merovingicarum series (Hannover, 1888). The vita devotes its attention to Gertrude's renunciation of marriage to a Merovingian noble, her co-foundation with her mother Itta of the double monastery on the Nivelles estate of the Pippinid family around 640, and her ascetic regime under Irish missionary instruction by the monks Foillan and Ultan. The text contains no reference to cats or mice. Her association with rodent control emerges much later. Belgian hagiographer Hippolyte Delehaye, the Bollandist editor whose Légendes hagiographiques (1905) remains a standard guide, traced the mouse iconography to fifteenth-century Low Countries devotional prints, where small mice are shown running up Gertrude's pastoral staff. The mice are most plausibly read as symbols of souls in purgatory, since Gertrude was also invoked by travellers and the recently dead, rather than as literal vermin. The patronage of cats themselves is a twentieth-century overlay first attested in American Catholic devotional pamphlets of the 1980s, not in medieval or early-modern sources; Mary Beth Augustyn's 2014 catalogue of Gertrude iconography at the Cloisters Museum found no pre-modern image showing a cat at the saint's feet. Nivelles itself remains a working town in Walloon Brabant of around twenty-eight thousand inhabitants; the abbey church, the Collégiale Sainte-Gertrude, was largely rebuilt after Allied bombing on 14 May 1940 and reopened in 1984. Gertrude's feast on 17 March still draws pilgrims, though Belgian feline rescue organisations have since adopted the day informally for cat-themed charity events, completing the late-modern reinterpretation of an early Merovingian saint.
