Simon's Cat
Internet 2008 · Simon Tofield (Tandem Films)
White cartoon cat whose silent food-demand gestures aimed at his off-screen owner became one of the most-viewed animal animation series on YouTube.
Created by British animator Simon Tofield and posted to YouTube on 4 March 2008 as the standalone short "Cat Man Do," Simon's Cat became one of the platform's earliest professionally-animated franchise hits. The short was nominated for a 2008 BAFTA. As of 2024 the channel has over 6 million subscribers and 1.4 billion total views. Tofield works in hand-drawn 2D, with colour kept to grayscale and a single occasional accent of red — the visual signature of the franchise. The premise of every short reduces to: the white cat wants food / wants the door open / wants to come back inside / wants something else, gestures wordlessly at his off-screen owner, escalates.
