Heed
Real pet · Guinness World Records — shortest-cat record candidate
A Guinness candidate that never made the page
Heed is recorded in early-2000s Guinness World Records correspondence files as a submitted but ultimately uncertified candidate for the shortest-cat-living title, in the gap between the certified record-holders Mr Peebles (2004–2007) and Lilieput (2013). The cat was a domestic short-haired female put forward by an American owner who, according to the public summary published in Guinness's 2006 annual press release on pending submissions, reported a measurement of approximately 14 centimetres from floor to shoulder. The submission was held in adjudication review and never advanced to verification, because the supporting veterinary documentation did not include the methodology Guinness requires for record-cat measurements.
How the Guinness shortest-cat record is verified
The shortest-cat-living title is verified by Guinness adjudicators using a procedure developed in 2004 for Mr Peebles: the cat must be adult, free of acute illness, and measured by a licensed veterinarian along the line from the highest point of the shoulder blade to the floor, with the animal in a standing posture. A second measurement is taken on a separate visit. The certification body explicitly excludes dwarf breeds such as the Munchkin from the "shortest cat" category for some submissions and includes them for others, depending on the year's rule-set; this inconsistency was reconciled in the 2014 edition that certified Lilieput, herself a Munchkin.
The unverified shadow record
Because Heed's file never cleared adjudication, the cat does not appear in any printed Guinness World Records annual, and the original submission paperwork is not part of the public Guinness archive. The name surfaces principally through cat-record enthusiast forums and through the 2010s genealogy of micro-cat candidates compiled by writer David Alderton in Cats: The Complete Guide. Researchers who have pursued the Heed paperwork through Guinness's media-relations office report being told the file is closed. The cat's recorded measurements remain a piece of trivia from the gap years between the two officially-recognised titles.
