Fritz
Comic 1965 · Fritz the Cat (Robert Crumb)
Underground-comix anthropomorphic cat whose 1972 film became the first feature animation to receive the X rating.
Robert Crumb began drawing Fritz the Cat in 1959 sketchbooks and published him commercially from 1965 onward in Help! and Cavalier magazines. The character — an anthropomorphic college-aged cat in late-1960s San Francisco — became a vehicle for Crumb's satire of the counterculture. In 1972 Ralph Bakshi adapted the strip into a feature animation that became the first to receive an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, and the highest-grossing independent animated film of its time. Crumb objected so strongly to Bakshi's film that he killed the character in a 1972 strip ("Fritz the Cat, Superstar") with an icepick to the head.
