Brindle Balinese Cat Names

Brindle is dog vocabulary. No cat registry uses it; the genetic equivalent in cats is the torbie — tortoiseshell-plus-tabby. On a Balinese, that combination shows up as the Tortie Tabby Point variants: a pointed coat where the points themselves carry mottled red-and-seal (or red-and-blue, red-and-chocolate) coloration with tabby striping running through them. CFA originally classified these tabby and tortie points as a separate breed, the Javanese, recognized in 1979, before merging Javanese back into Balinese as a single breed with separate color classes in 2008.

Like all torbies, a brindle-pattern Balinese is nearly always female. Male torbies occur at roughly 1 in 3,000 births and almost always carry XXY (Klinefelter syndrome), usually rendering them sterile. The pattern reads sharpest in seal-and-red, where contrast on the points is highest. GCCF lists 34 total Balinese color variations, with tabby-and-tortie variants making up most of the second half of that list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does brindle mean on a cat?

It is borrowed terminology. 'Brindle' is the standard coat term for dogs with mottled dark stripes on a lighter base — Boxers, Mastiffs, Greyhounds. No major cat registry uses it. The cat-fancy term for the equivalent pattern is 'torbie' (tortoiseshell + tabby) or 'patched tabby.' On a Balinese specifically, the brindle look maps to the Tortie Tabby Point variants — formerly classified as a separate breed (the Javanese) before CFA merged the divisions in 2008.

Why are nearly all torbie Balinese cats female?

The orange (O) allele is X-linked. A female cat carries two X chromosomes and can be heterozygous (Oo), expressing both orange and black-base color in a patched pattern. A male cat normally carries one X and one Y — either O or o, but not both — so a male cat is fully orange or has no orange at all. Male torbies do exist at about 1 in 3,000 births but typically carry XXY (Klinefelter syndrome), which usually makes them sterile. Pedigree breeding programs do not use them as studs.

What was the Javanese breed, and how does it relate?

Javanese was CFA's name from 1979 to 2008 for the lynx-point and tortie-point variants of what had previously been Balinese. CFA originally divided the longhaired Siamese-type cats into two breeds: Balinese for the four traditional point colors (seal, blue, chocolate, lilac), and Javanese for the tabby-pointed and tortie-pointed variants. In 2008 CFA merged them back into a single Balinese breed with separate color classifications. Cats sold as Javanese before 2008 are genetically the same breed as torbie-pointed Balinese sold today. See our cross page for Balinese chocolate-point names and for Balinese tabby naming, both of which trace to this same merged division.
