A calico cat is almost always female, and the reason is X-linked. The orange/non-orange gene sits on the X chromosome. A calico needs both an orange and a non-orange allele to produce the patchwork, plus the spotting allele for the white. Female cats are XX and can carry one of each; during early embryonic development, X-inactivation randomly silences one X per cell, producing the mosaic of orange, black, and white patches. Males are XY and inherit only one X, so a true male calico requires an XXY karyotype — Klinefelter syndrome. Wikipedia gives the rate as roughly one in ten thousand, and these males are almost always sterile.

The pattern carries unusual cultural weight. Calico has been the official state cat of Maryland since 1 October 2001, chosen because the orange-and-black coloring mirrors the Baltimore oriole and the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly. Japanese sailors traditionally kept a calico aboard as a ship cat to ward off shipwreck. The maneki-neko beckoning figurine — Edo-period in origin, earliest documented 1852 — depicts a calico Japanese Bobtail, and the tricolor pattern is called mi-ke, meaning three-fur.

The most-cited modern calico is Tama, who served as stationmaster of Kishi Station on the Wakayama Electric Railway from 2007 until her death on 22 June 2015. She was promoted to executive officer in 2009 and is credited with saving the line.
